The Desert Years: Growing in a Vacuum

Every great journey has a "why." For Verdant Mentorship, that "why" was born in the quiet, isolated stretches of rural Arkansas.

When I started my career as a Physical Therapist, I was promised a guide—a mentor to help me navigate the complexities of patient care. That promise went unfulfilled. Instead of a collaborative environment, I found myself in a professional vacuum. I was treating chronic pain & complex cases without a compass and working alongside clinicians who didn't respect my clinical reasoning or my voice.

I wasn't growing toward a goal; I was growing based on "what not to do." It was a lonely, stagnant, and frankly terrible feeling.

The Survival Phase: Wearing Every Hat

I thought my second job would be different. Again, a mentor was promised. Again, I was left to figure it out alone.

This time, the stakes were higher. I was in a private practice, managing two outpatient clinics, handling home health, and balancing outpatient care—all while trying to learn the totally new skills of marketing and contract management. There was no support, no guidance, and no opportunity for true professional evolution. I wasn't thriving; I was just surviving.

The Turning Point: The Power of a True Guide

It took years of practicing—working as a travel therapist and eventually rising to become a multi-site clinic director—before I experienced the life-changing impact of an actual mentor. Ironically, my first breakthrough didn't come from a clinical mentor, but a leadership mentor.

• ✓ Confidence: I felt comfortable in my own skin and my professional decisions.
• ✓ Boundary Setting & Balance: I found the strength to say "no" to things that weren't a good use of my time, that didn't fulfill me, and that didn't serve either the patient or the practice.
• ✓ Acceleration: I grew more in months than I had in the previous years combined.

Later, during my fellowship, I found my clinical North Star. This mentor challenged me not out of pride, but out of a genuine desire for my growth. They forced me to step back and ask: "Have you considered a different way?"
